Cut regression execution time by roughly two thirds

A caller ID software product built for multiple carriers and pre-installed on their handsets relied on manual regression passes, so I built automation to cut execution time and free up hours for deeper testing.

Context

Enhanced caller ID software was built for multiple carriers and pre-installed on new handsets from device manufacturers (OEMs), on Android and iOS. Every carrier and device combination multiplied the test matrix, and regression was largely manual and time-consuming.

Risk

Every hour spent on repeat manual execution was an hour not spent on exploratory testing, while defects reaching OEM acceptance testing before release cost a full release cycle rather than a day.

Approach

  1. Wrote automation in Python and Ruby for the repeatable execution layer, integrated with the Jira and Zephyr APIs, cutting execution time to a third of baseline.
  2. Led build and integration testing across OEM Android devices.
  3. Served as subject matter expert and test lead for a major carrier integration program.
  4. Designed and maintained the test case library for a product shipping across a wide matrix of device manufacturers and OS versions.
  5. Authored onboarding documentation, technical specifications and internal tutorials in Confluence.

Result

Timed before and after the automation went in, execution time dropped to roughly one third of the previous baseline, freeing up time for exploratory and additional testing beyond the integration and regression passes.

Evidence

Delivered Python and Ruby automation scripts with Jira and Zephyr integration, a maintained test case library, and onboarding documentation, technical specifications and tutorials in Confluence.
